Luxury Wrist Watches – An Introduction

Brequet TourbillonIn the modern era, a digital watch could easily replicate the functions of an analog watch but that is besides the point. Luxury wrist watches are so much more than time-telling devices, they are a celebration of magical human craftsmanship, achievement and patience. It’s no wonder that they make treasured lifelong gifts.

Encrusting wrist watches with diamonds is one way to justify its premium valuation, but perhaps of more value is the incredible complexity of the mechanical movements, painstakingly crafted by the premier watchmakers of the world.

To understand the appeal of wristwatches which has spawned a legion of avid collectors, one must appreciate the intricacies of the ‘complications’. A complication essentially refers to any feature in a wristwatch beyond time-telling, such as a chronograph, date display and phases of the moon. Complications are categorised into three groups: visual indicators, astronomical indicators and acoustic indicators. A ‘grande complication’ is a watch with three or more complications and at least one from each of the three categories.

Got the Mojo?! will feature luxury wristwatches that are currently still available in normal retail channels rather than rare classic watches which can be considerably pricier. I leave you with Patek Philippe’s advertising slogan which correctly captures the enduring allure of a luxury timepiece, “You never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely take care of it for the next generation.”
