Rolls Royce Phantom – unabashedly extravagant

The current incarnation of the Rolls Royce Phantom is the first Rolls Royce car produced under BMW’s ownership and a revival of the ‘Phantom’ series which was last produced in 1991. Despite competition from Bentley and Maybach, no other ultra-luxury saloon makes a statement quite like a Rolls Royce, whether this is a blessing or a curse.

The new Phantom has a 6.75L V12 engine  producing 453 bhp, accelerates to 60mph in 5.7s and has a top speed of 149mph. It retains the old-world charm, refinement and charisma that you expect of a Rolls Royce. The interior is spacious and classy with fine leather and wood panelling, and the ride is very smooth and quiet except at higher speeds where you detect some wind flutter. It doesn’t have as many bells and whistles as the Maybach though – no drinks cabinet and no fully-reclining seats.

At a pricetag of £250,000, this is clearly for the fabulous wealthy who don’t mind being visibly fabulously wealthy.
